PEER GROUP MEETINGS
We have self-help support meetings where you can meet with other people who have been bereaved by suicide. They provide an opportunity to listen, to share, to ask questions and to connect with others.
Groups are led by a small team of volunteers, most have been bereaved by suicide themselves. We meet once a fortnight and meetings last for around 2 hours. There is no rigid structure to the session – people are free to talk and listen as they wish – although we do try to bring a relevant topic up for discussion.
Our aim is to provide members with information surrounding the loss of their loved one through suicide, that isn’t provided through the “normal” channels. Questions will always arise after a suicide, and not just surrounding the actual loss. We can assist with the right questions to ask relevant professional organisations to ease people through this time. We also aim to provide as much assistance as we can with counselling, peer support, and prevention education.
Our team of supporters are available to prepare home-cooked meals for anyone who has very recently suffered a loss. These will be meals that are practical for freezing, and will benefit for at least a week after a bereavement. We are also available to offer garden maintenance, dog walking, transport and really anything that will assist a person as they manage their grief in the preceding weeks.
We have a qualified Counsellor in our team of supporters who is available, upon request, to provide counselling sessions for members and their immediate family. This is a free service, and offers up to six sessions for individuals, or couples. Please use the Contact Us form in the interim while our website has a booking system set in place.
In our Thursday evening gatherings we occasionally provide Art Therapy, Meditation, Mindfulness, Reflections and Journaling exercises. These activities are not always planned into the meeting time, but naturally evolve throughout the discussions. Our planned evenings with a specific activity will always be advertised prior to the date.
